Sensory friendly Christmas

Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year with many events to look forward to, but this time of year can be difficult for friends and loved ones with Autism or other processing disorders.

Reminisce & Prepare:

Take a moment to explore photos and videos from previous Christmas celebrations. Reviewing these images and clips allows your loved one to reminisce about happy and joyful holiday experiences. It also provides an opportunity for them to cope with challenging moments, especially with your guidance. Utilize pictures, and videos to engage in conversations with your loved one about their fondness or aversions related to Christmas activities, while brainstorming helpful strategies together.

Keep Gatherings Small:

The Christmas season often brings families and friends together in larger groups. However, for many, both kids and adults, these gatherings can be a bit overwhelming, especially with people they don’t know well. To make things easier, consider keeping your Christmas celebrations more intimate. If you do find yourself in a big group, try to keep those activities brief and enjoyable! And remember, it’s always a good idea to have an exit plan if you need a break.

Take Breaks:

Make sure your loved one is well-fed, rested, hydrated, and has had a chance to use the restroom before attending Christmas events. Planning ahead and addressing these essentials can help your loved one cope with sensory overload.

Remember to schedule a bathroom break, ensure they get a good night’s sleep, and allow for some quiet time before and after the festivities. If they have restrictive or limited food preferences, ensure that you bring this to the event for safe options for them to eat as well.
